The International Commission of European Citizens (ICEC) has sent this New Year message to the self-determination movements throughout Europe. It has a special reference to Scotland and Wales who have crucial elections in May.
“Even in these difficult times the start of a new year is a time of hope, a time to show solidarity with those who are seeking the right to choose self-determination in countries throughout Europe.
We are not isolated. Whether in Catalonia, in Flanders, in Wales, in the Basque Country, in Veneto, in Scotland, in South Tyrol, in Sardinia, in Greenland, we have people with distinctive identities and cultures and interests who are seeking through non-violent democratic action the right to determine our own future. We may have differences but we seek the power to nurture our cultures, economies and communities and that unites us.
Scotland and Wales both have major election in 2026 and we will all await the outcome with hope that parties supporting independence do well.
Another Europe is possible.”
Martyn Day, Convener of the Scottish Independence Convention, welcomed the statement and added
“We need more than ever to cooperate with other movements throughout Europe to show that we are all in the mainstream of democratic values. We have distinctive identities but the support for non-violent self-determination brings us together.”
