The Scottish Independence Convention will ask candidates for the 2026 Holyrood elections to sign
personally the following Declaration.
ON THIS WE AGREE
- Scotland has been recognised as a distinct nation for over a thousand years
- Scotland has internationally recognised borders
- Scotland has long-established social, administrative and cultural institutions
- Scotland is resource-rich
- Scotland has a highly-educated population
- Scotland has an established legislature with significant but limited powers
- We believe that the people of Scotland have the democratic right to vote for independence at a time of their choosing
- We believe that Scotland can be a successful independent nation
There may be things on which we disagree but – ON THIS WE AGREE
Roza Salih, Co-Convener, said it was essential that we get a clear commitment from those seeking to be
MSPs – “There will be several pro-independence parties standing and this may be confusing for voters.
There will also be some disagreements among them. We want to highlight where there is agreement and
we want to be able to say after the election that we have sixty-five plus MSPs who have personally signed
this.”
Co-Convener, Martyn Day, added – “While SIC will be contacting candidates as they are adopted, we will
be passing on the responses to local activists to use in their campaigns. It will be an opportunity to
challenge candidates who will not support Scotland’s right to choose

I agree with all these remarks
I agree with these facts and principles. No candidate in a Scottish Parliament election should be taking the anti-democratic stance of denying that the people of Scotland have the democratic right to vote for independence at a time of their choosing.
It is up to the people of Scotland to decide its future
I support the principles set out in “On This We Agree”. Scotland is a nation with its own democratic institutions and a clear right to determine its own future. I believe the people of Scotland should have the opportunity to choose independence and build a successful independent country.
I wholeheartedly agree
As the declaration outlines, those of us who support independence may have differing views on many issues, but there are core beliefs and principles which bind us together in our vision for an independent, self-sufficient and successful Scotland.
I fully support the democratic right of the people of Scotland to choose our future, and I believe that decisions about Scotland’s path should always be made by the people who live here.
Denis Johnston
SNP Candidate for Strathkelvin & Bearsden
I agree
I’m pleased to add my support to this declaration.
Scotland has everything it takes to succeed as an independent country — the talent, the resources and the democratic institutions. The key principle is simple: the people who live here should have the right to decide our own future.
We may differ on tactics or timelines, but the democratic right of Scotland to choose independence is something many of us can agree on.
